Motivational Interviewing; Successful Behaviour Change in Healthcare
What is Motivational Interviewing? Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a conversational strategy that improves behavioural change outcomes in the person’s best interests. Its strategies can reduce maladaptive behaviours by moving individuals towards healthier choices, in a subtle, discreet and effective way.
About the Course One-day, face to face communication skills workshop for those healthcare professionals to learn more about Motivational Interviewing Skills in a Healthcare setting. This evidence based course has been designed to help healthcare professionals, engaged in health promotion and behaviour change activities to communicate more effectively. The course is ideal for small groups, to allow for theory, practice, conversation and effective practical opportunities. We recommend around 12 people to ensure beneficial communication, however courses can be smaller or larger dependent on practice needs.
This course will equip you with the fundamental knowledge and skills in Motivational Interviewing. Over the course of one/two days you will learn techniques to engage those who are not contemplating positive behaviour change and support those who are. Armed with these the MI principles, processes and tools, you will enhance your current practice and future behaviour change within a range of healthcare settings.
Why choose this course? We all know that providing information on consequences of behaviour is not fool-proof, even the most simple advice can negatively backfire, counterproductive to a successful and healthy behaviour change. Understanding how language and skill-based strategies can motivate a client, highlight importance and promote readiness to change, create ownership over behaviours, and influence and improve health outcomes are vitally important. Applying these techniques that motivate and underpin healthy change can become a standardised and underlying method to patient communication with the right guidance and facilitation.
What will the course entail?
The course will provide theory and understanding of behaviour change, in both taught and practical examples.
The course will highlight potholes in communication that may be creating setbacks, and how to re-address these conversations with clients.
The course will be broken in to 4 main areas; Theory of Motivational Behaviour Change, Successful Communication Styles, Engaging and Evoking Change, and Dealing with Ambivalence, discrepancy and conflict.
Who is the course designed for? The current course has been successfully run nationwide with Healthcare Professionals; Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Health Care Practitioners, Support Workers, Assistant Psychologists, Dentists and Dental Nurses. The course has provided to non-patient leading roles, such as Rota Co-ordinators, Ward managers, and Human Resources personnel within the healthcare setting.
