You stand on the threshold of independence and are asked to choose what life will look like after the Sixth Form or college setting. Sound familiar? Being told the choices you make today will shape your future tomorrow? We’ve all been there, feeling unprepared to make choices that inevitably affect the next stages of our lives - into higher education, apprenticeships, jobs, or just considering that independent lifestyle. For many students, this journey involves the transition from sixth form or college to university – a huge leap that brings with it a multitude of choices and decisions to be made. With so much information out there from teaching staff, course mentors, family, and friends – what direction do you take, and whom do you listen to? Well, the most important person in this situation, these decisions to make, is right there – spoiler alert – it’s you. The biggest decision you have to make is what you want to do; the biggest obstacle you face is what others may want you to do. Yes, we’re here to support, help, and guide you - but fundamentally, it is you who will be taking those steps into your new future.

The Career Crossroads - where you’ve been, where you are, and where will you go? We all know that sixth form and college is an intense time of academic focus, exciting possibilities and the consideration of our future careers and goals. Choosing university before even completing your A-levels can feel overwhelming and a career path can feel very much like a #FutureMeProblem. It is however so important to think about your future goals and where you may see yourself, whether it be next month, in one year or in 10 years time. Being a Registered Psychologist such a rewarding career path, with so many options of areas you can specialise in; from Clinical, Health, Occupational, Counselling and many more.
Becoming a Registered Psychologist does however take time and dedication to the particular field you wish to specialise in. Out of university, an accredited BSc Hons Degree means you can register for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) which also means you can continue on your studies on to an accredited Masters, or Doctoral Programme. From there you are able to study a number of qualifying MSc courses that lead you down the path to your specialised profession. Health Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Occupational Psychology and Sport and Exercise Psychology all have a dedicated MSc to complete to continue on your training. This is called you Stage 1 in that filed or area. This MSc would normally take around 1 year Full time, or 2 years Part-time dependent on your university and specific course. From these Stage 1’s, you are able to continue on to Stage 2 - also known as a Doctorate in that particular area. Not sure how that looks? See the flowchart below! You’ve made it to the UCAS Deadline, so what’s next for your University Preparation? Some of us by this point have jumped in with both feet, everything planned out, prepped and ready to go - whilst others may have only dipped their toe in the water to see what it’s like - both of these are perfectly normal and in either case, you are not alone! Whilst you wait for offers, there's so much you can do to plan and prepare, making the most of the time before you potentially start a new chapter. Imagine the exam hall stretching before you, a vast arena with question choices as hurdles to conquer, different directions to dart, and an all compassing ticking clock toward the finish line. As the laser focused essay writer, you must first weave through your essay choices - the ones you feel you can answer with the breadth of knowledge and understanding from your revision. Then tackling the differing terrain of arguments, marshalling the evidence you envisage before you, and deliver a well-crafted response before the clock strikes zero. This may sound daunting, but fear not, for just like training for a marathon empowers you to conquer the distance - the seemingly impossible task at the beginning laying before you, by conquer small manageable bitesize sections of the road ahead will help equip you to ace your essay writing sprints within the exam arena. |
